11 Helpful Tips on how to Start Your Digital Marketing Career

1. Eagerness to Learn

The digital marketing industry is both fast-growing and astonishingly competitive. It’s easy for companies to distinguish between candidates who are willing to learn. This industry requires enthusiasm and a passion for succeeding.

2. Stay Updated

It would help keep on top of industry news by watching major digital marketing sites and influential people on social media.

The major sites such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter regularly update their paid advertising platforms and algorithms, and you’re in for a wild ride if you don’t keep on top of the latest changes.

Here are some suggestions of websites to start-

PPC – PPC Hero, Search Engine Land

SEO – Moz, SEOGadget, Distilled, Search Engine Land

Content – Hubspot

Social Media – Social Media Today, Social Media Examiner.

3. Personal Projects

Try out your ideas, and don’t just treat industry leaders’ views as teaching.

Everything isn’t black and white in the digital marketing business, with many grey areas between best practices and results for a business.

Every digital marketer should have their projects to test out theories, try their hand at multiple disciplines ( Social Media, PPC, SEO, Content Marketing, etc.), and take accountability for the success or failure of a project.

4. Build Your Brand

Imagine yourself as a digital marketing hotshot, but you have no visible online presence?

If you want to show an employer that you can build their company’s visibility, you need to show that you can first create your brand.

A solid online presence could potentially be the deciding factor between two candidates who have applied for the same position.

5. Learn Terminology

Digital marketers should be comfortable with acronyms such as PPC, SEM, and SEO.

They are all very diverse titles, with a misunderstanding of them being a clear indication that you are a beginner and need further training.

The ability to interpret digital marketing campaigns and recognize what elements worked or not is dependent on your ability to understand industry jargon.

6. Get Nerdy

Digital marketing is often regarded as quite charming, but truth be told, it’s often more technical and data-driven than we would admit.

You won’t be creating websites from scratch, but you will be communicating your marketing strategy to a team of developers or designers responsible for including your suggestions.

Possessing a basic knowledge of HTML and graphic design would help you stand out among the less technically minded candidates.

7. Metrics is The King

Can you tell your CPC from your CPA?

If you want to set yourself aside in an interview, talk about the return on ad expense for a campaign you’ve run.

It’s easy to talk about an interesting artistic concept you’ve helped to develop, but the fact remains the same money talks.

You need to realize how each marketing channel has performed and what the necessary learnings have been.

8. Network

You should surround yourself with people more talented than you.

The people you meet will be your continuous support channels when you run into problems and help open doors to possibilities you might not have otherwise found.

Always attend industry meetups and conferences in your area to nourish relationships with other digital marketers and enhance your skill set through in-depth workshops and presentations.

9. T-Shaped Marketer

Rand Fishkin of Moz commonly refers to having a basic knowledge of multiple marketing methods but training in one or two particular skills.

It’s not unusual for companies to find applicants with a ubiquitous digital marketing skill set to be valuable assets, as there’s considerable cross-over between the different channels.

It will also make you better equipped to choose a more specific focus path that you can specialize in.

10. Study How to Use Digital Marketing Tools

Apart from learning how to use Google analytics, you also need to

learn how to practice other digital marketing tools.

When you soar up the ladder and become a digital marketing manager, you will have to lead a team of digital marketing professionals.

The single way to assess their work and control the progress of many projects simultaneously is done using tools.

A great tool will create dashboards for all channels and meaningful reports to management or clients.

There are various good tools available, and although they are not free, the monthly fee is an investment for your career and another perfect item for your resume.

11. Certification

If you wish to stand out from your companions in the industry, completing a certified digital marketing course will definitely help you.

One of the significant issues faced in the digital marketing industry is that there are no restrictions to entry, meaning that anyone with a bit of knowledge of industry terminology can possibly get positioned in a company.

As this industry matures, recruiters are becoming savvier about what differentiates a candidate who can talk the talk, but it may be a costly mistake for the company.
